Tips, Tricks, and Tools

Tips, Tricks, and Tools that every pool operator needs to know about

Starting out in this business having a mentor can be the difference between early on success and “learning the hard way” and for that reason I have compiled some useful tips and words of advice to help guide you.

  • Know your worth by always charging for your time - The day you start handing out free services is the day you become “that guy”. That guy is the guy that people know they can call to troubleshoot an issue or come look at something that they will try fixing themselves and you have just lost yourself valuable time and money. Your time is valuable!! I think about “The Ship Repair Man Story” where the man fixes an engine issue others have failed to fix. He is studying the engine and then pulls out a hammer and taps this one spot and its fixed. It is less about the tapping of the hammer and more about the experience and knowledge it took to know where to tap. Value your work and charge accordingly.

  • Each one, Reach one, Each one, Teach one – Don’t hoard information. We should always be looking at training the next generation of pool operators to do things the right way and to carry yourself as a professional not just a pool guy/gal. No matter what part of the industry you are in there is always an opportunity to help another operator and share the knowledge that you have worked so hard to achieve.

  • Integrity is key – Mistakes will happen as nobody is perfect but always work with integrity and when you make a mistake do what is right and fix it. Making these mistakes is part of learning and part of becoming a master of your craft
